Death Penalty

I am for the death penalty, I believe that it is fair that when a person kills another, that person shall serve justice with his/her life as well. Many people who oppose the death penalty will argue that it is “cruel and unusual punishment.” But, what is crueler, stabbing an innocent person to death because of money issues or a painless injection that puts the body into deep sleep? Murderers like Charles Laverne Singleton are cold hearted and kill their victims in brutal ways. On the night of June 1, 1979 Singleton entered York’s grocery store to rob Mary Lou York, unfortunately, what started as an aggravated robbery escaladed to murder as he stabbed her twice in the neck. Mrs. York bled to death on her way to the hospital. At the time that Singleton committed murder he was sane and knew exactly what he was doing. It is unusual that Singleton suddenly became insane as he awaited his death. I think that Singleton was faking insanity because he feared execution. There have been cases like this where people get caught for murder and plead insanity. During the 1970’s Kenneth Bianchi (Hillside Strangler) murdered 10 women (16-28 years old) by strangling and raping them. When Bianchi was being charged with two murders his defense was insanity, and he also said that one of his multiple personality committed the murders while he was in an unconscious state. Through psychological studies it was later confirmed that Bianchi was faking insanity. Singleton should be given antipsychotic drugs to make him sane enough for execution because like Bianchi he can also be faking insanity to avoid his punishment for murder; for this reason there should be a law where medicine prepares people for execution.

Free Needles

The free needle project exchanges used syringes for new ones free of charge. Free needles are a good idea because it will provide drug addicts clean needles, and it will prevent them from sharing used syringes that cause lethal diseases such as Hepatitis and HIV/AIDS. Even though some people believe that it will encourage drug use, this project is a big step in the fight against AIDS. When people are addicted to drugs and lack needles they are forced to use the same ones because they are not thinking of the risks, but of their high; they will do anything in order to get drugs into their body. In the San Francisco Chronicle, Dr. Roy Robertson, Edinburgh's leading authority on AIDS among drug addicts, estimates that within 18 months of the arrival of AIDS in Scotland, more than half of the city's addicts were infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and that just 30 miles away in Glasgow, where free needles were available, studies have found that only 4 percent to 7 percent of addicts are infected. San Francisco is in need of a free needle project because the HIV infection rates among addicts estimate at between 13 percent and 20 percent which is considered low. This means that they still have the time and the opportunity to stop AIDS from spreading rapidly among the addict population. Free needles project is a good idea because it can deter lethal diseases to innocent people such as the babies of drug addicted mothers.

Fahrenheit 9/11

The Fahrenheit 9/11 was made before Bush’s term was over so that the American people didn’t vote for him a second time. In this film the claim that I do agree with Moore is about the attack in Iraq. Moore states, “On March 19th, 2003, George W. Bush and the United States Military invaded Iraq, which had never attacked or threatened to attack the United States. A nation that had never murdered a single American citizen.” President Bush used scare tactics on the American by saying that Iraq was hiding weapons of mass destruction that were going to be used to attack the U.S. once again. The decision for the Iraq war had nothing to do with 9/11, the war on terrorism, the weapons of mass destruction, or Iraqi human rights; oil was the main purpose of the war. If Iraq really had weapons of mass destruction I think Bush would not have invaded Iraq because of the risk of another attack. Bush knew the entire time that Iraq didn’t have anything to do with the terrorist attack of 9/11 and that there was no weapons because on August 6, 2001 Bush was notified that Osama bin Laden was planning on hijacking airplanes to attack America. But, he ignored the fact and went fishing that same day instead of calling a meeting to discuss terrorism in the U.S. By attacking Iraq Bush benefited because of his personal investments in oil drilling companies and the wealthy oil men who finance his election campaigns. I read an article that states that Bush had already decided to invade Iraq six months before September 11th, and the reason was to improve Western access to Iraqi oil. The war in Iraq was unnecessary and caused a lot of innocent people to die and lose their family and homes, and it all happened for the love of money.

People do not choose which sex they are attracted to because they are born with the preference of men or women. In adolescence most people know what their preference is (gay or straight), but most gay people deny it. Most gay people date their opposite sex in order to fit in and not disappoint family and friends. Some gay men tend to have straight relationships, get married, and then divorce, have gay relationships, and live a gay lifestyle. It is until gay people decide that they want to live happy when they stop living in denial to please people and start having same sex relationships. I don’t discriminate against gays, lesbians, or bisexuals because I believe that these people were born gay and can’t help who they are.
